AB 1300 - Family Connection and Young Offender Rehabilitation Act of 2007

Family contact has been repeatedly shown to correlate with lower recidivism rates. However, families are unable to maintain meaningful contact with youth incarcerated in the Department of Juvenile Justice (DJJ). AB 1300 will reform many of the institutional barriers that regularly affect families dealing with DJJ. This measure adds the provision of education and promotion of family ties to DJJ's purpose; providing that DJJ shall encourage communication between young people, their families, clergy, and others. Additionally, this measure provides for timely notification of family when visitation rights are suspended and establishes a toll-free phone number for families to call for updates and visiting times.
